how it works
Are you looking to move your wealth back into community?
By being part of our Circular Giving Community, your donations and vote directly support community projects.
The Being Human Foundation acts as facilitators, convenors, and a vehicle for the transfer and sharing of wealth; we do NOT take part in the decision-making process.
1. No-Fee Membership
Sign-Up
Sign up for a no-fee annual or monthly membership to make regular donations (see below).
Your regular donations are pooled with other members of the Circular Giving community ("Circular Givers" or "Givers").
Our membership is accessible and equitable; individuals who are unable to donate can still sign up for a VOTING membership to vote.
You can adjust or cancel your membership anytime.
Membership registration is through Zeffy.
2. Project Listings
You will receive an email/text notification when projects become available for funding and are listed below.
Projects are reviewed by The Being Human Foundation to ensure they align with our Community Engagement Model and our Re-Worlding Model (see below for our focus areas). Project leaders will have completed our Community Engagement Training Programs here, and may have leveraged additional office hours.
Projects are welcome on a rolling basis.
3. Voting
Cast your vote on the project you'd like to support!
You will be asked a verification question from your membership card. The Being Human Foundation will verify on the backend.
Due to our commitment to equitable and accessible capital, you do not have to make a donation in order to vote.
Voting period: 72 hours
The Being Human Foundation will notify both Givers and Project Leaders of the selected project.
4. Top-Up Period
The Top-Up Period is a 48-hour period where Givers can choose to make additional donations to the selected AND/OR unselected projects.
We will send a donation form for any Givers who may wish to make additional contributions.
Please be welcome to note: at this time, tax receipts are only available for U.S. citizens.
Once this period is complete, The Being Human Foundation will reconcile and disburse funds to the project leaders within 72 hours.
membership overview
True to our non-competitive and equitable commitment, we offer two zero-cost memberships. Votes are weighed the same across each membership, empowering individuals who cannot make regular donation contributions to participate in voting and the circular giving process. The invitation to participate in the Top-Up Round offers an opportunity for Voting Members to make ad-hoc contributions for those who may wish to do so, if regular contributions are not feasible.
To us, being engaged in community looks like listening to our fellow community members and coming together to co-create change in our own communities. It means empowering community members to create their own change in their community.
We invite you to engage in community in ways that align with our Community Engagement Model.
Engaging in community can take on many forms including:
volunteering your time with other organizations
starting, organizing, or delivering grassroots initiatives
starting, organizing, delivering, or facilitating community programs
making monetary or item donations
starting and/or organizing activism/movements
contributing to social justice and policy through community research, projects, petitions, etc.
We also invite you to engage in your community in ways that align with our Re-Worlding Model. When communities come together, we re-world in ways that align with community needs.
Our model identifies five Re-Worlding themes that are overlapping at the root of change; when we re-world in one of these themes, we re-world in others.
The Planet: Honouring and supporting sustainable life for all, including animal rights, climate change, and displacement.
Freedom To Be: Honouring and supporting gender diversity and gender equity, including LGBTQ++, gender-based violence and equitable access to health.
Equal Opportunity: Honouring and supporting anyone with limited abilities, physically, and/or mentally, including disabilities awareness and accessibility rights.
Indigenous Reconciliation: Honouring and supporting Indigenous relationships and knowledge, including landback motions and displacement.
New Beginnings: Honouring and Supporting displaced people and families, people on the move, and returning citizens with a history of incarceration.
Examples of
projects you'll be able to support
Period Product Distribution: Distribute period products to remote, Northern, Indigenous communities to increase accessibility and enhance equitable and access to health. Read our case study here.
Arts Healing for Immigrants: Support an immigrant family in your community with arts-related projects to help them ease the transition through engaging in relevant cultural practices.
Community Clean-Ups: Organize a community clean-up to keep your local areas clean, safe, and sustainable open for members of your community.
faq
How many types of memberships do you offer? We have two types of memberships available:
1) Contributor Membership for those who would like to make regular donations to our Circular Giving Community and vote on the projects the community will support.
2) Voting Membership for those who are unable to make regular donations to our Circular Giving Community, but wish to participate in voting on the projects the community will support.
Voting rights in both memberships are weighed the same: each membership gets 1 vote).
But I don't know anything about participatory grant-making! No problem :) We're here to help! Participatory grant-making is really just the act of coming together with others to fund projects through grants. Our process and community is designed for EVERYONE -- and also allows you to contribute as a group AND individually. We will also host events and workshops to explore these concepts further -- and get to get to know one another, of course! If you have any questions, email us at circulargiving@thebeinghumanfoundation.org.
Do I have to participate in your programming or training to be part of your Circular Giving community? It is not mandatory, but it may be supportive for you to participate in our Community Engagement Programs to get a better understanding of our Community Engagement Model and Re-Worlding Model. Taken it and have feedback? Connect with us here.
We also offer other resources, events, and workshops on "assessing" community engagement that you may find supportive.
What are the membership fees? We have two types of memberships: Contributor Membership, who make regular donations to contribute to the donor pool, and Voting membership for those who do not wish to make regular donations. Both memberships do not have fees.
Apply for a Contributor or Voting Membership below.
Can I be part of the Community Giving Circle while also launching a project? Yes!!!! We encourage this, to stay truly aligned to our community-led, community-driven approach. Of course, you cannot vote for your own project, but you are still able to vote for other projects (and we hope you do!), to align with our non-competition values.
Can I donate to projects individually, even if the Giving Circle votes to support a different project? Yes. After voting, The Being Human Foundation will send a donation form for you to make an additional donation to the selected project and/or the other projects that did not receive funding. Top-Up Period: 48 hours.
Do I have to contribute all my of regular donations to the pool? Yes, though we are aiming to include an option in 2026 where you can allocate a portion of your funds to The Pool and another to hold/save into different "accounts". This will also better support your ability to donate to projects individually. If your intention is to support projects individuals as well as voted selected projects, we recommend only donating a portion of that regularly, so that you can spread the rest across other individual donations.
Can I pause my contributions? Yes, of course! Just email us at memberships@thebeinghumanfoundation.org and we'll get back to you within 24hrs to coordinate.
Are my contributions tax-deductible? Right now, if you are in USA, you will receive a tax receipt for your contributions. Unfortunately, in Canada, donations are not tax-deductible. We are hoping to obtain charity status in Canada by 2026 to give Canadian citizens tax receipts for tax deductions.
